Claude Design vs. the Figma Agent: Which Should You Use?
Quick answer
Use both. Figma, with its agent (generally available since October 6, 2026), stays your team's design canvas and source of truth. Claude Design, available in any Claude chat and in Claude Code, is faster for on-brand prototypes, decks, and one-pagers that go straight to code.
Side-by-side comparison
| Figma agent | Claude Design | |
|---|---|---|
| Lives in | Your Figma files | Any Claude chat, and Claude Code |
| Source of truth | Your Figma libraries | A design system imported from a GitHub repo, design files, uploads, or your local codebase |
| Best at | Team design work, iterating inside existing files, motion | Fast on-brand prototypes, decks, and one-pagers that go straight to code |
| Gets to code via | Figma's MCP server and Dev Mode; Make's codebase mode (closed beta) | Handoff to Claude Code, or /design in the terminal |
| Cost | Figma AI credits (since October 6, 2026) | Your Claude plan's usage limits; available on every plan, including Free |
| Current limits | Code layers and codebase Make are waitlist-only | No version history yet; simultaneous editing is still basic |
When to use the Figma agent
- Your team already designs in Figma and needs changes inside existing files.
- You want the output built from your published Figma libraries and design library guidelines.
- You're working on motion, image assets (Weave tools), or shaders alongside the layout.
When to use Claude Design
- You need three directions for a screen, deck, or one-pager in your real brand, fast.
- Your design system lives in code, and you want prototypes built from your actual components.
- The next step is code. Claude Design hands the result to Claude Code, which continues from your design instead of starting over from a screenshot.
How to use both in one workflow
- Keep your design system current in Figma and in code.
- In Claude Code, run
/design-syncto import the design system into Claude Design. - Prototype two or three directions in Claude Design and pick a winner.
- Refine the winner in Figma with the agent if the team needs to review it there.
- Build it: send the design to Claude Code, or connect Figma's MCP server so your coding agent reads real tokens instead of guessing from a screenshot.
Try it now: design a screen with Claude Design
Where: Claude Code, inside your project. If your design system is built in React, sync it first so designs use your real components:
/design-sync
Then describe what you want after /design:
/design a pricing page with three plans (Starter, Pro, Team), with the Pro plan highlighted. Make three variations: cards, a comparison table, and a slider that calculates price by team size.
What you should see: Your variations as artboards on a Claude Design canvas that you open and edit in a desktop browser. Pick the winner, then ask Claude Code to build it in your project. A first-time /design-sync on a large repo can take a few hours.

Frequently asked questions
Is Claude Design free?
Claude Design is available on every Claude plan, including Free. It counts toward the same usage limits as the rest of Claude, so heavy design work can use up your plan's allowance faster.
Does Claude Design replace Figma?
No. Claude Design is strongest for fast, on-brand prototypes that go straight to code. Figma remains the shared canvas where teams design, review, and maintain a design system, and its agent now works inside those files.
Does the Figma agent cost extra?
The Figma agent was free during its beta. Since it became generally available on October 6, 2026, it uses Figma AI credits, drawn from the same budget as Figma Make.
How does Claude Design get a design into code?
When a design is ready, you send it to Claude Code, either on your machine or on the web, and Claude Code continues from the design instead of starting from a screenshot. In the terminal, /design-sync imports your design system and /design creates and edits designs.
What is still in beta in Figma?
As of October 10, 2026, Figma Motion, shaders, and generative plugins are in open beta. Code layers and Figma Make's local codebase mode are closed betas with a waitlist.
